Startup Noir NOLA: Empowering Black Entrepreneurs in New Orleans

As a city steeped in culture and resilience, New Orleans has long been a cradle of innovation. Today, it’s also becoming a beacon for Black entrepreneurship, thanks to programs like Startup Noir NOLA. This initiative, driven by Greater New Orleans Inc. (GNO Inc.), is making strides in supporting Black-led startups and fostering an inclusive business ecosystem.

Fostering Innovation and Equity

Black entrepreneurs have historically faced systemic barriers to accessing capital, mentorship, and networking opportunities. Nationally, Black founders secured only 1% of the $200 billion in venture funding in 2022. Recognizing this disparity, Startup Noir NOLA was created to provide Black innovators with the resources they need to thrive.

Through strategic mentorship, educational workshops, and curated networking events, Startup Noir NOLA is building a community that champions equity. Programs like HBCU internships and planned private equity tracks further position Black entrepreneurs as key players in New Orleans' growing tech and innovation sectors.

Daphine Barnes, the initiative's program lead, highlights its purpose: “We aim to create a space where Black founders can launch and scale their ventures, with access to the capital and support systems they need.”

Celebrating Success to Inspire Growth

Startup Noir NOLA also emphasizes the importance of amplifying Black-led business achievements. By showcasing success stories, the initiative attracts attention, investment, and collaboration opportunities.

Jasmine Brown-DeRousselle, GNO Inc.’s Chief Engagement Officer, notes, “When we highlight the measurable impact of Black businesses, we not only inspire others but also draw essential resources into our ecosystem.”

Recent tech milestones in New Orleans, such as Lucid’s $1.1 billion acquisition, demonstrate the city's potential as a hub for innovation. Programs like Startup Noir NOLA aim to ensure that Black founders are an integral part of this growth.
